The USSA and its partners defeated Arizona legislation that could have harassed sporting dog kennels out of existence.

House Bill 2517, sponsored by Representative Nancy Young Wright (D- Tucson), would have mandated unlimited kennel inspections based only on the written complaint of a citizen.

Under the bill, no effort would have been made to verify the credibility of the complaint. There was no requirement that there be probable cause before an inspection was required. Finally, there was no limit to the amount of inspections that could occur based on written complaints.

The National Rifle Association was one of the key partners in the effort and mustered significant opposition from among its Arizona membership.

“This bill would have given carte blanche ability for animal rights extremists to harass kennels out of existence by forcing daily kennel inspections,” said Rob Sexton, USSA vice president for government affairs. “Law-abiding kennel owners do not deserve this kind of treatment and we’re proud of those Committee members who stood up to protect sporting dog kennels.”

The bill was defeated in the Government Committee by a 5-4 vote on March 3.

Take Action! Arizona sportsmen and sporting dog owners should thank the following members of the Government Committee who voted to protect kennel owners by voting “No” on HB 2517:

    Chairman Sam Crump (602) 926-3014
    Vice-Chairman Steve Montenegro (602) 926-5955
    Representative Frank Antenori (602) 926-5683
    Representative Adam Driggs (602) 926-3016
    Representative David Gowan (602) 926-3312
