Kaibab Conservation Project
From the Arizona Deer Association
Come help wildlife on the Kaibab!
June Project
We need volunteers to help redevelop the Rice Hollow Trick Tank on the Kaibab. Work & camp area (at the project site) set-up will begin on Friday the 20th, with the major work party beginning Saturday morning the 21st. Volunteers will be working with Buckskin Chapter, Grand Canyon Trust, North Kaibab Forest Service, and Game & Fish personnel to replace the old apron and install a wildlife walk-in drinker….we will also be refurbishing the supply system to the livestock trough, and replacing the top & bottom runs of the enclosure fencing with barbless wire. Everyone is invited to camp in the area with us or just come up for the day on Saturday, help with the project, and stick around in the evening for a Dutch-Oven Dinner before calling it a day. Everyone is reminded to bring personal protection gear (hats, gloves, closed toe shoes or boots, and insect repellent) as well as any drinks, snacks, and food supplies needed….not counting of course the Saturday evening Dutch-Oven Dinner which will be provided by the Buckskin Chapter & the Grand Canyon Trust. We also request anyone having fencing tools, shovels, rakes, double-jacks, and electric drills/nut drivers bring them along also…..we should have enough portable generators to power several drivers when we put the new panels on the apron frame (bring smaller sockets like 3/16, 1/4, 5/16 & 3/8).
Experience in this type work is not necessary though helpful….a desire to help provide wildlife & livestock water to an area that hasn’t had any for several years is all that is needed. And you do not have to be a member of any of the organizations listed above to come and help….we take all interested parties. An invitation to The Mule Deer Foundation, Az Elks, Turkey Federation, Az Bow Hunters, and any other area organization is also extended….come join us on a worthwhile joint venture to bring water back to the Sowats area on the beautiful Kaibab Plateau.
There will be a sandwich board sign at the Sowats turn-off, at the Rice Hollow turn-off, and at the projects site turn-in. The following are approx mileages to each location from the junction of FR 462 & SR 22 (Mill Road). To get to the junction from the Jacob Lake Lodge; go south on 67 to the first right (FR 461), take it all the way down the hill to FR 462, turn right and go down to the pavement (SR 22) at the junction…..turn left/south
From the junction it’s approximately 11.5 miles to the FR 425 turn-off
Go right on FR 425 for 8.5 miles to FR 233 (Sowats turn-off with sandwich board sign)
It’s 1.3 miles to FR 655 (Rice Hollow road with sandwich board sign)
And 1.6 miles to the project (visible off right side of road & will have sandwich board sign)All roads are clearly marked. Feel free to call if you have any questions or need more info……(928) 645-9669. Looking forward to seeing a bunch of you again this year.
