Looking ahead to next steps
Now that the President’s budget is out, we are taking the next step to educate Members of Congress on the need for increased funding in the FY2008 appropriations cycle. Copies of the House and Senate “Dear Colleague” letters are online at teaming.com. We need your help asking your Members of Congress to sign these letters. They are an important marker for the support from the Congress on increased funding for the State Wildlife Grants program. These letters ask for an increase to $85 million, just as they have for the past few years. Last year’s State Wildlife Grants funding was $67.5M and this year’s President’s budget calls for a slight increase to $69.5M. Our goal this year is to get the support of at least 200 Representatives and 60 Senators on these letters. Please help us reach these goals. The Senate letter is being led again by Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and John Warner (R-VA). The House is being led by Congressmen Mike Thompson (D-CA), Jim Saxton (R-NJ), Ron Kind (D-WI), and Robin Hayes (R-NC). Ron Kind is one of the current co-chairs of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus; several of the others are past chairs.
Please forward the letters to your Members of Congress right away and ask them to sign on! Remember there are many new Members of Congress that we need to educate about the State Wildlife Grants program and the resulting State Wildlife Action Plans. Good luck and thank you in advance for your help.
